Women who paint their lips bright red do so because they exude self-confidence, a study revealed yesterday (Fri).

Ladies who use the fiery colour - like singer Christina Aguilera - are more likely to enjoy an active sex life and have better career prospects than women who wear less striking shades.

It also emerged those who go for bare lips usually lack confidence and feel less sexy than those who wear brighter colours.

Three quarters of the 3,000 women polled said admitted the shade of lipstick they wore affected their mood.

And almost seven out of ten said they changed the colour depending on the mood they were in.

A spokesman for VIE at home, which carried out the research, said: ''The findings show just how much influence the colour women put on their lips can have.

''By applying deep red lipstick women instantly feel more confident, sexy and in control - which could be why the women who wear the shade are more likely to succeed in their career path too.

''Wearing lipstick is a quick and affordable way for women to draw attention to their lips, making them feel more attractive and instantly inject some glamour.

''Also altering the shade of lipstick worn can totally change a woman's look.''

The study also revealed more than half use lippy as a pick-me-up, with 55 per cent saying it cheered them up if they applied some while they are felt down.

One in four women said they turned to deep red shades if they wanted to feel sexy, while another quarter applied a pale pink lipstick when they are feeling happy.

And to get noticed, almost half would rely on a bright red, while 24 per cent would rely on a deep red shade if they wanted to feel sexy.

Two thirds of women also turn to dark shades in the evening after sticking to a more neutral colour during the day.

The poll found that the average women owns lipsticks in five different shades but only keeps one in her handbag.

And a party was named as the most common reason for switching to a different shade, along with going out for dinner or drinks after work and going on holiday.

A spokesman for VIE at home added: ''The fact that the average woman has five different shades of lipstick shows just how obsessed they are with the cosmetic.

''And the research also suggests that applying a certain shade of lip colour can totally change the way a woman feels.''
