LIFETIME OF PAIN

NEWS COPY

The average Brit spends nearly 20 years of their life in pain, according to research.

Aches, injuries and illnesses mean we will spend almost 17 weeks a year suffering from some sort of pain or extreme discomfort.

That adds up to 19 years, seven months, one week and five days between the ages of 18 and 78.

The biggest chunk is taken up by joint pain, which affects the typical Brit for more than two-and-a-half weeks a year, or three years over a lifetime.

A further fortnight of each year - two years and six months during a lifetime - is spent in agony from painful headaches.

But researchers also found three quarters of people are worried about the affects of relying too much on traditional painkillers.

And 78 per cent would rather choose a natural remedy to help them through the pain.

A spokesman for Litozin Joint Health, which carried out the poll, said: ''Everyone suffers pain at some point but when you add it all up, it really is a staggering amount.

''However, it's worrying to think that through this long period of time, many Brits are relying on painkillers such as paracetemol to get them through the pain.

''Studies have also shown natural treatments can help improve overall mood, energy and sleep quality as can even cut down on consumption of pain killers too.''

The poll of 3,000 Brits found that a year and nine months of a lifetime - just over ten days each year - is spent in pain from bruises, while another year and seven months is taken up with stomach ache over a lifetime.

Sinus pain accounts for more than a year and a half and we suffer from heartburn for an average of 16 months - or eight days every year.

Pain from cramp and pulled muscles leaves people feeling sore for two weeks in every 12 months - two years and four months of a lifetime - while cuts hurt for a week every year.

A cricked neck aches for another five days a year and earache affects people for almost three days.

Soreness from sprains or strains also accounts for three days of pain a year, or almost six months of a lifetime, while eye infections leave people suffering two days annually.

Another week of each year is spent suffering from blisters and veruccas and nose bleeds account for a further two days.

Even flu leaves Brits feeling tender for three days a year, or more than half a year of their lifetime.

It doesn't end there for some unlucky Brits though as 44 per cent have also suffered a broken bone, with more than a quarter having to go through the pain at least twice.

Seven per cent have even broken five or more bones.

Dr. Kaj Winther Biochemist at the Frederiksberg Hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark comments: said: ''The study shows just how much of our lives are overshadowed by being in pain - in particular joint pain.

''Some natural remedies now have the science to show they are proven to relieve pain such as joint pain with fewer side effects than drugs''.
