Cheese and pickle has reclaimed its crown from the BLT as Britain's favourite sandwich, according to new research.
The classic combination of cheddar cheese and chunky pickle tickles the taste buds of sandwich lovers across the nation.
Brits simply aren't interested in exotic fillings such as pastrami and gherkin or king prawn mayo' and avocado, preferring simpler options such as cheese and egg instead.
In fact, 56 per cent of people polled prefer to eat a fuss-free simple sarnie over more unusual options found in supermarkets.
And at home, most folk only buy in basic fillers such as cheese, eggs, salad and tuna.
The poll of 3,000 people, conducted by the premium discounter Aldi, revealed egg mayonnaise is the second most popular sandwich filling in the UK.
The BLT - bacon, lettuce and tomato - traditionally the nation's favourite, has been pushed down into third place.
Tuna mayonnaise and cheese and tomato complete the top five most popular sandwiches.
Aldi's cheese buyer said: ''It's great to see that real classics are still popular with the British public. Cheese is a real diet staple and with so many varieties available, there is cheese for all tastes and occasions.
''Appearing six times in the top 20, shows how versatile a food stuff it really is as it can be teamed with almost anything to make a great tasting meal or snack!''
The poll shows the average person will buy one sandwich from the supermarket each week, and will make another four at home.
Some 73 per cent of people regularly take a packed lunch of sandwiches to work - with 83 per cent choosing them because they are the quickest and healthiest lunchtime treat.
Ham and cheese is the sixth most popular sandwich filling, whilst chicken salad is the seventh.
Chicken and bacon, cheese and onion and prawn mayonnaise complete the top 10.
Aldi's cheese buyer added: ''Over the past 12 months we have seen a strong rise in demand for our three cheese ranges, right through from our Bishops Land range which includes the British favourite, cheddar to our specially selected Parmigiano Reggiano.
''We pride ourselves on our local supplier relationships and are always looking for new, high quality products to fill our shelves.''
