A COSTLY AFFAIR
NEWS COPY
The average affair leaves an adulterer with a #8,000 dent in their pocket even if the fling doesn't lead to an even more costly divorce, a study found yesterday (Mon).
Wannabe Casanovas will spend a staggering #2,000 on occasional secret holidays or weekends away and another #1,000 on wining and dining their bit on the side.
A further #916 will go on booze and food in country pubs and around #1,000 on flowers, chocolates and sexy underwear.
Even travelling to and from a romantic night away has its consequences - costing approximately #66.36 a month or #796.32 a year.
A spokesman for www.OnePoll.com, which polled 2,000 love-cheats, said: ''This survey shows that conducting an affair is a bad idea on a number of levels.
''Of course the partners suffer the most as a result of an affair, but folk are cheating themselves if they think getting into debt over a bit on the side is a good idea.''
The study found cheats spend at least #1,182.72 on hotel bills every year for regular meetings with their lovers.
A further #1,013.63 goes towards wining and dining while exactly #916.92 is splashed out in pubs on the outskirts of the town or city to hide away from prying eyes.
Nights out, including clubbing and the cinema, cost up to #78.61 a month - that's #943.32 a year.
It also emerged most mistresses receive at least 10 boxes of chocolates, 11 flower bouquets, 10 sets of clothes or sexy underwear and jewellery in a 12 month period - worth a whopping #1,057.44.
The poll revealed that even the cheated partners are showered with gifts whilst their other half plays away from home.
Eleven per cent of adults say they are more likely to take their partner for a weekend away if they are having an affair, while one in 10 usually buy flowers on the way home from a dirty liaison.
Another one in 10 resort to buying chocolates regularly to ease their guilt, and seven per cent are more likely to treat the children to toys or money to make themselves feel better.
And carrying out an affair isn't easy - a third of lovers say they always lose weight when they are seeing more than one person during the same period of time.
But well practiced adulterers have an easier time - 20 per cent always have two mobile phones; one for their long term partner, and one for the bit on the side.
One in 10 people carry another set of clothes in the car, and five per cent always have an overnight bag handy with a spare toothbrush and clean underwear.
